World Press Freedom Day
May 3 All day
Defending Truth, Protecting Voices
World Press Freedom Day is observed every year on May 3 to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, highlight the importance of independent media, and raise awareness about censorship around the world.
Proclaimed by the United Nations in 1993, this global observance commemorates the 1991 Windhoek Declaration a landmark statement advocating for free, independent, and pluralistic media. This day also honors courageous journalists who risk and sometimes lose their lives in pursuit of truth.
In 2026, the global commemoration event will be hosted in Lusaka, Zambia, bringing together media professionals, policymakers, and advocates to reaffirm the essential role of a free press in democracy and human rights.
