International Astronomy Day

April 25 All day

Spring: April 25, 2026
Fall: September 27, 2026

International Astronomy Day is celebrated twice a year in spring and fall scheduled near the first-quarter moon to provide optimal viewing conditions. The timing allows people to clearly observe lunar features while still seeing brighter stars and planets.

Founded in 1973 by Doug Berger, then president of the Astronomical Association of Northern California, the event was created to bring astronomy directly to the public. His idea was simple: set up telescopes in busy public places so that anyone could experience the wonders of the night sky firsthand.

Purpose of International Astronomy Day

The day aims to:

  • Promote public interest in astronomy and space science
  • Make stargazing accessible to communities
  • Encourage science education and curiosity
  • Connect people with local astronomy organizations

International Astronomy Day reminds us that the universe belongs to everyone. By looking up at the sky together, communities can share in discovery, wonder, and a deeper appreciation for science and exploration
