The idea for International Tea Day was promoted by Chinese scholar Chen Entian, who advocated for greater global recognition of tea’s importance. On December 21, 2019, the United Nations officially adopted a resolution establishing May 21 as International Tea Day. The resolution also called on the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to lead and support the global observance of the day.
