New Year’s Day
January 1 All day
New Year’s Eve has been celebrated for thousands of years, marking the transition from one year to the next with rituals, reflection, and hope for new beginnings.
The earliest recorded New Year celebrations date back to around 2000 BCE in ancient Babylon. The Babylonians celebrated the new year during a festival called Akitu, held in mid-March to mark the arrival of spring. It was a time of renewal, symbolizing rebirth and fresh starts themes that still define New Year’s Eve today.
Later, in 46 BCE, Julius Caesar reformed the calendar and established January 1st as the official start of the new year in the Roman Empire. He named the month after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, doors, and transitions often depicted with two faces, one looking to the past and one to the future. This symbolism remains at the heart of New Year’s Eve traditions: reflection and anticipation.
During the Middle Ages in Europe, some Christian leaders temporarily replaced January 1st with religious dates. However, in 1582, the introduction of the Gregorian calendar by Pope Gregory XIII restored January 1st as New Year’s Day a system still used by much of the world today.
Modern New Year’s Eve celebrations often include fireworks, countdowns, and public gatherings. One of the most famous traditions is the ball drop in New York City’s Times Square, first held in 1907. Millions now watch the event globally each year, symbolizing unity and shared hope.
